Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse on Friday said that the Foreign Ministry had a pivotal role to play in countering the adverse propaganda launched by the Tamil Groups operating overseas lobbying for a separate state in Sri Lanka and the country’s diplomatic missions overseas would have to forge closer links with their host governments to defeat the LTTE’s strategy.
"Terrorism in the country has been defeated, but we must not allow the Pro-Ealam lobby and the other groups operating in exile and lobbying for a separate state in Sri Lanka to mislead the world community and the Tamil expatriates," he said.
Those groups had been able to launch a massive propaganda blitz in other countries and foreign governments were reluctant to cooperate with Sri Lanka to help eliminated LTTE terrorism, the Defence Secretary said.
Sri Lanka’s strategy of countering LTTE propaganda had paid dividends after the government posted senior military personnel to key diplomatic posts in the countries where LTTE supporters were active. The Defence Secretary said the posting of Maj. Gen. Udaya Perera as the Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia was a case in point.
The intelligence network established by those men had drastically changed situation in Sri Lanka’s favour, he said.
